You use ATMA or GoMule and send the .d2s or .d2x file. Then delete it your end when it has been received.

if you want to trade or play with someone it could be smart to ask if they use a mod you don't like, like plugy i know people that don't want to trade with people using plugy.

Single player is the best for me, because:

1. You can use player editors to setup chars to start in higher difficulty levels, with the appropriate stats and level.
2. You can backup your save games.
3. You can undo accidental skill choices with an editor.
4. You can undo skill selection mistakes for new builds with an editor.
5. You can't get banned.
6. You can use multiple versions of the game for different builds (1.10+ screws up lord of mages, so use 1.09).
7. You can play cool mods such as Median 2008.
8. You don't have to worry about silly cheaters.
9. You can use editors for build testing.
10. Your internet connection can be down, and you can still play.
11. You can't get killed by silly player killers.
12. You don't have any lag (great with 40+ summons).
13. Your characters won't get deleted if you don't play them for a while.
14. You don't have to take other players in account when you don't want to play anymore.
15. You get to beat the game solo all the way through hell, and see how good you really are.
16. You don't have to share items with anyone.
17. You can use the players command.
18. You don't have to worry about getting dupes in trades, because they won't be deleted.

I guess this little list sums it all up, unless I forgot something, of course :D
