There can be many reasons for this.
1. The disc is dirty or scratched.
2. The Optical Drive is dirty.
3. The Xpac CD is a copy.
4. The Optical Drive is too old.
Check the disk, make sure it's clean. You can clean it with Alcohol and a soft cloth. Try it in another system, if possible, see if it gets recognized there. Use a can of air and blow out the CD Drive, then use a Q-tip with some rubbing alcohol on it and clean the lens. Do this carefully, don't press too hard on the lens.
If it is a legitimate CD, you can return it to Blizzard for a free replacement, you only pay the shipping to Bilzzard. If the CD is scratched too bad, it is wasted, but you can return it as well. In both cases of return, you will have to return it with the CD key.
Good Luck

Ty.
But i am sure the CD works.
I installed it on my laptop and it recognized it fine.
I guess i will clean my cd drive. :)
do u think the original has to be installed ON the computer rather than my jumpdrive (may not read outside sources)
Ty for everything.

I would recommend installing it on the hard drive only to ensure a quality install. That would't affect the CD Drive being unable to read the disk, however. More often than not the disk gets smudged. One small area of goo in the right spot will prevent the lead-in from being read and the drive can't recognize the disk.
Personally, I use a Q-tip, dipped in alcohol and I wash the entire disk surface with it, washing from center to rim while rotating it. Use Isopropyl if you have it, but rubbing will work too. No need to dry it, let it evaporate.

ummmm, ya.
Beer isn't gonna do it. Beer is only 4-6% alcohol. You need 90-99%, see. Beer is just going to make it worse. Not to mention a waste of perfectly good beer.
Isopropyl or rubbing alcohol. In a pinch, 100 proof vodka, gin or white rum will do. Those will be 50% at least. Also, you never stated if the CD is a copy or if it is scratched at all.

Thats all the advice I can give you. If the CD is factory, not scratched, broken or gooed up then you may have an issue with your Optical Drive.
If your machine is several years old, you have cats, you smoke at your machine, your machine is a Compaq, you live on a dirt road or any combination of the previous, the drive may be toast. Since you stated that you installed it on the laptop, I would suggest you may want to look into replacing the CD Drive.

if you ever have problems running D2 from a flash drive, give me the registry locations, and ill make you a quick Registry Patcher, so you just run the patcher and d2 wil play like its properly installed on the pc.
murari, u shouldnt have washed it wit beer...
and...orc dragoon: what's pledge??

It could be the CD-ROM drive. Did you check to see if other CDs are detected and function correctly when placed in the drive? YOu can also try using an external USB CD-ROM in place of the internal one to verify if it works.

For most PC games you do not need the installation discs to play it anyway. You just need to copy the neccessary files to your C drive in most cases. You may also need a Virtual CD drive Emulator. GOOGLE IT you will find your anwsers.
