I got my game Battlenet-ready after I got my new computer hooked up to the Internet. This upgrade is what I needed for all of my old characters to work (they were edited by Hero Editor).
Here's my question: Do Battlenet characters not work if they're not played for a certain period of time?
BTW, don't worry about me cheating. I don't play against other players on Battlenet. I play D2 by myself. Thanx.

Open net is the place to be then, not Closed net... u can use your chars from single player, and open net is hack city, extremely hard to get a game goin, lotta fail to join games cause of the extreme hacks. extreme extreme hacks will prevent u from making a game... i personally dont see the fun playing open net, gets really boring... and no, ur chars will not expire cause they are saved on your pc, not bnet realm.

In order to use Hero Editor, I had to get the game Battle Net ready. So, when I got my new computer, the characters from my old computer didn't work at first. They do now, but I was worried that characters had to be continually used or the PC would fail to recognize the files.

Nah, all chars made for single player will always be saved on your hard drive. When using HE, make sure you save it when you edit.
