I don't think a literature forum is a good idea. The majority of this forum seem to be teenagers and they are not generally considered to be voracious readers. I am very much a non-fiction reader, although I do read scifi, fantasy and horror sometimes, and my interest in the Earth and space sciences are probably not everyone's cup of tea. The best you can hope for is a "What are you currently reading?" thread and perhaps get it stickied there's enough interest.

i voted for a good idea. i dont ready very much, but that doesnt matter. discussing books you like with others is always nice, even if some others dont like it. if you think its boring, just dont read the thread, problem solved :)

anyone here read the D2 books? i have read "The Black Road" "The Kingdom of Shadow" "The Moon of The Spider" and one other i cant remember the name of. i really want to read the Sin Wars books too.

and i also read the warcraft books, but dont remember the name atm :)

I read all the time, and I'm a tad surprised more of you guys don't read.
Obviously you enjoy the concept of imaginary worlds (hence games) so books should be right up your alley.

Some amazing books:

Anything by Orson Scott card or R.A. Salvatore, but specifically:

Ender's Game, Xenocide, The Memory of Earth
The Crystal Shard, Exile

i have looked at R.A. Salvatore before, but i havnt found any time to read some of his books. i just finished reading The Belgarad (or The Belgariad, dont remember) which is a 5 book series by David Eddings and read the follow up series (also 5 books) The Malloreon.

i also got 3 other books from a friend i want to take a look at :)

edit: forgot about Belgarath The Sorcerer and Polgara The Sorceress (both by David Eddings) which also is related to the 10 other books i read by Eddings

I tend to read the Eddings fantasies at least once a year, and have done so for the last 15 years. I know that's 19 books, not including Elder Gods series, but to me it's like visiting old friends. R.A. Salvatore tells a good story too.

wow. read them every year? so you really know the story in those books then. when i have read the other D2 books i havnt read yet im considering to start on The Belgarad series again. those books where simply amazing.

i voted for. i read loads of books. Orson Scott Card is awesome! - i love Ender's Game. i like Phillip ****, Lukyanienko (Night Watch, Day Watch), Tolkien (omg, Sillmarillion!) and William Gibson books, Dark Elf books by Salvatore, Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. in general - science fiction, fantasy, criminals, computer books (ok, i'm geek).

soon i will finally have time to read Diablo books - especially Sin War trilogy, i just got Veiled Prophet. N_V - i finally found Moon of the Spider!!! (not paper edition though - well, i guess i will have to read it on my comp *sigh*)

thats great. i would recomend The Kingdom of Shadow first though since Moon of The Spider is the follow up book.

and NV is enough (names on this site gets underlines which is why it looks like N_V), or just Thomas if you prefer that. got loads of nicks on various places, so whatever suits you is ok ;)

I do like the idea of a more serious "topical" arts forum, if not specifically a literature forum. If there was a stronger general art following on the boards, definitely. As-is, I think we could do with a serious forum for discussion of music, literature, fine arts, etc. If it takes off, cool. If not, well, it can be low-traffic and then perish. Trial runs work like that.

What does everyone think of this?

i think the idea is great, im sure some here have talents with drawing and such, and even if its "low-traffic" that could be because of lack of time do sit down and do something. im not good at drawing myself, but i enjoy looking at pictures from people that can make good art. also i love reading fantasy and wouldnt mind discussing books i have read with others and recomend books.

great idea ;)

I think you sell quite a few teenagers short when you make this statement. In the 80's and 90's when video games were becoming huge mainstream items I was growing up but it didn't keep me from being an avid reader.

I own most of R. A. Salvatore's books as well as Margaret Weiss and Tracey Hickman. I like Stephen Kings' Nightmares and Dreamscapes and Eyes of the Dragon too.

Sounds good to me.

If it doesn't work out, what is there to lose?

Chronicles of Amber- Roger Zelazny, Quite possibly the best set of books EVER wrote.

I think the original purpose of a lit. forum was to allow writers a area to post their writing and get feedback.

BTW it seems D2's IQ is slowly dropping.

God I hope we don't go down that path, there is absolutly nothing worse that bad fan fiction. I get enough of badly written crap as it is.

@Belhemel - I don't think I'm cutting anyone short with my statement, it simply said that teenagers aren't generally voracious readers. My daughters are 18 and 19, both started reading before the age of 5 and both have personal libraries of over a thousand book, but they seem to be the exception. I teach, well train actually, many in the late teens and early twenties and the biggest gripe I here from them is why do I have to read so much. Most have not read a book since leaving high school and it's not that the cannot read, they seem to read newspapers and magazines without a problem. Hopefully the Harry Potter generation will grow up with a different point of view, then again, the Goosebumps/Animorph generation didn't.

EDIT: I saw it Jiggy, pity that I wasn't fast enough to quote it. LMAO ATM.

I didn't know flaming was free speech. :D

Do you know what my elder daughter is studying at uni?
Professional writing and editing.

Do you know where she got her start?
Fan fiction.

Do you know why she stopped writing fan fiction?
At the age of 13 she was better than everyone else and got flamed all the time.

Do you know what she does now?
Submits examples of fan fiction to a "Fan Fic. Sucks" site.

I know a fair bit about fan fiction and I've had to plow through more of it than I care to remember. The vast majority is no better than the average emo poetry that festers in the dark corners of cyberspace, and guess what? None of it is art.

I didn't mean a fanfic forum, I'm really not a fan of it, but feel free to post it if it's some of your writing and you want to share. I'll put this together shortly. I meant general discussion of the arts - music, writing, etc. Not "post examples of "art" by your definition" heh. So, if you've got good edited polished pieces of work - papers, articles, essays, songs, sketches, etc.

Essentially, it's a subforum for those who wish to be involved, not for spam and mean comments and the general garbage I find myself deleting on a daily basis.

Good thing we have a KGB to keep our speech unfree.

Being mean and rude and a general jerk for no damn reason is not free speech. Your speech isn't limitless on this forum, there are rules - you will show respect and you will be courteous, or you will be removed from the discussion.

Feelings?

You have kids? GOD someone should slap the sh it out of you and take your ability to reproduce. Thank GOD they are of age.

The Artists create our world and idiots like you are actively working to destroy it.

You call that an expression of feelings? You're lucky you're still able to post. Clean it up.

I've been very lenient, PMing people numerous warnings. Some people are only a few flames/threads-consisting-entirely-of-one-word away from a tempban. Is a modicum of thought and purpose behind posts too much to ask for? Seriously. Spam somewhere else, not here.

Threads consisting of 1-word-posts and messages to specific other users should be kept to PM or IM (since I know at least some of you collaborate via IM). "Attn: XYZ" threads are fine if you are giving a thoughtful response to something that they asked but isn't covered in an existing thread etc. Otherwise, let's keep things where they belong, shall we?

This is off-topic and it's settled - we will try out an arts forum.
