Need some character file help

I recently reinstalled the game after a break, but Ive run into a few problems. When I uninstalled the game it asked something around the basis of saving my character files instead of deleting those along with the uninstallation of Diablo 2 LoD. Now that I've reinstalled the game, my character doesn't seem to be there. I've found the character file and it is categorized as a BAK file. What are the steps to putting my old character files into my reinstalled LoD game? What folder does it need to go in and such. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

The .bak file isn't the type that the game uses to open up your know character.

I believe the file is supposed to be a .d2s file. If you don't have those...then I'm guessing they're lost.
