DS: Will there be Open Battle.net and LAN play?

Jay Wilson: Currently we plan to allow everyone to play, even offline. What we've done though is changed the menu to encourage Battle.net play. In Diablo 2, the first option was Single Player. You click it, playing the game in normal difficulty, and think "Hey, now I want to play with my friends." Because if you look at Battle.net, you can't bring your single player character over. There's still a separation of offline and Battle.net characters. We want all to know that it's better to play on Battle.net. You can play with others and if they want, they can password their games and play alone. But should you decide to play offline, then we want the player to know that he is absolutely not required to play online. We have no intent to support LAN games, because we focus on Battle.net, where we have the ability to keep everyone in contact with the Blizzard community.

IMHO this is the first serious casualty of D3. LAN Parties have been some of my favorite gaming times and not having to fight through bnet helped make them great.

Its a sad day when a gaming company tries to tell me the best way to play a game.

But on the other hand, by keeping multiplayer online rather than lan, the amount of hacking, account theft, and scamming can be slowed or prevented since Blizzard can then actively moderate and remove rulebreakers, cheaters, hackers, and scammers.

Although, yes, lan games will certainly be missed.

L.A.N. = Local Area Network

It is a type of online gaming that is direct computer to computer networking without using battlenet, but still connected to the internet in most cases.

Lan can also be direct computer to computer connection within the same building as well.

Lan games can also be hosted via VPN (Virtual Private Networking), but that is slightly more involved than standard lan games.

I am a computer tech by trade, lolz...

I guess since it's not a shooter, there is no need for LAN competitions. Still, it's kinda weak not to have. How many shooters don't have coop anymore, heh.

uhhh if no LAN-play

and you NEED internet for LAN play

Why not just go onto BNET make a game and tell the other "LANner" to join?

me and my bro use to do that to help each other

its the samething as lanplay prettymuch

Internet is not always needed in LAN.

Granted, sometimes it is, but if a person has 2 or more game discs, 2 or more computers, and a hub/router/switch, the computers can be connected via intranet, which is a direct computer to computer connection via private non-internet networking.

I don't see how that will make a difference. Blizzard can still actively moderate the game even if there are people playing LAN, since LAN and B.net as nothing in common, except for being the same game. You can cheat in LAN, and Blizz won't notice (and should not care), same in SP, but on B.net they can detect cheating, and should do something about it.

Not having LAN is going to get a lot of players pissed off I think.

LAN is less safe than bnet because Blizzard cannot detect account theft and scamming as easily which leads to massive customer service requests due to the account recoveries and scams and viruses.

As a business, I can see why they would want to not include LAN support since it has alot more customer support required due to the issues I stated.

By making it only multiplayer via bnet, they can control the multiplayer games more closely and reduce the amount of account issues, viruses, and scamming that players have to put up with.

Of course, from a customer point of view though, it's less enjoyable because you can't have your own game server to host lan with, but as I said, they are a business and as such, they have every right to exclude the option to reduce the workload on customer support by restricting multiplayer to bnet only.

But as I also said though, lan games will be missed.

D2 is still going to keep lan and so for lan gaming, people can always go back to D2 for that option.

I also agree, no lan will irritate a great deal of players.

In LAN games there are no accounts, only chars stored on your comp (assuming it will be same/close to same system as in D2), and I don't see many people trying to scam on LAN, since can just use cheats anyway. So there shouldn't be more customer service required with LAN play as without it.

I've known many people who got their information stolen from lan games due to keyloggers.

Most places now have internet access. Just have your group all throw in some money for a switch/hub depending on which type of ISP you have. Then you'll just set up a password protected game on Bnet and you'll just tell your friends the room name/password.

A friend of mine and I LAN all the time with our 360's but we mostly play online. Yea we could be doing it at home, but you don't get the LAN experience. So I bring a switch I have, and we both play online.

I just play on Bnet with my friends...so...this doesn't affect me too much.

Plus...I think the amount of people that play D2 on LAN only is pretty small compared to the SP or Bnet players. O_o

SP players do play with eachother over LAN though, and it will probably affect quite a few of them =/

As I have come to detest B.net, my only multi player games now are on LAN with some friends.
Besides, the place where I stay during the week (for uni) has a server that blocks B.net. Therefor, LAN games are my only options for mp games during the week (when I'm with my friends). Which will become impossible in D3...

Can I ask why you detest B.net?

http://www.diablo2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5343There's many ways to solve that.

It's obvious that the general population of ANYTHING is going to be ignorant and stupid. By only playing with people you trust...it definitely cuts down on the frustrations.

And because I have exactly 7 friends that play D2 where I stay, LAN just suits me fine. That way I don't have to create new characters and don't have to fear that every game I enter has at least 1 hacker in it

*shrugs*

This issue really doesn't affect me, but I really don't see the problem if you're just playing with friends anyway...make private games.

People complain about the hackers and jumpers and junk while trying to level...and it's amazing what can be prevented with a password that only your group knows.

In my entire life, I've known maybe...3 people besides me IRL that play D2, and only have played with one online and he plays East.

That's when I'm with my friends....And making chars you can only play in the weekend doesn't sound really attractive to me
