View Full Version : What's the 3 remaining characters?

Still no news on exactly what they are, but here's some interesting info:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q&A with Jay Wilson, Lead Designer

Question: Any one big thing you wish you’d had the chance to talk about but didn’t?

JW: I wish people had asked a few more story questions, because we’re bringing back a lot of characters from the previous games. The Barbarian has his own story, and it’s actually meant to be the same Barbarian from D2, the same person. A lot of those characters, we’re trying to pull forward and give them a real place in the Diablo universe - a history and a feeling of depth that I don’t think the previous games have done enough justice to. It’s a great universe with the coolest lore, and we really want to make sure this game serves that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This completely rules out that the 3 remaining characters are "new" characters, and since he used the words "a lot of characters from the previous game" I doubt we will see only one more character from the previous titles. There's still hope for the Assassin! :)

Well I'd guess Necros will be brought back if they plan on bringing back "a lot of characters" as he said. Since Blizzard is working with Knaak and his novels, I just can't see how they will be left out, since Necromancers and the cult of Trag'Oul is the core of the stories.

I'd also like to see some sort of Sorceress class, but since they aim at a male/female choice for each class they would either need to make it Sorcerer/Sorceress or perhaps we will see a Viszerei class. I'd like to see the Assassins as well since an Assassin can be male as well which won't be a problem and some sort of paladin. If the WD don't get Shape shifting skills I can see a class like that, but perhaps in a later expansion.

Well, from what I've heard there will only be 5 classes. Of those 5, I really don't see room for the necro with the W.D. around. Maybe they will have some sort of storyline to cover that up.

I'm also pretty damn sure they will have a Mage-type class, you can't make a RPG without it.

Kinda hard to ask questions regarding the characters lore when they wont tell what characters will be in the game, but this is rather confusing. The said that the characters will be all new so I, along with many other ppl, thought that they would be entire new classes not seen in the Diablo series before, but I apparently they will bring back chars from D1 and D2. Might be as NPCs.

With new chars they prolly meant that they would totally redefine the specs of the chars. I dont know. Im a bit confused :)

Of the 3 remaining chars I do have a pretty good idea of what they will be, or so I think at least, hehe

Well, 2 chars have been released. The barbarian, brute force, and the WD, summoning and death (so i dont think we will see a Necromancer, at least not as a playable char). That leaves us with three types of characters remaining.

First of, I think we will see some kind of Bow using char. A new type of Amazon(D2)/Rogue(D1). It would be kinda odd of there wasnt a bow using char since there has been that in the two previous games.

Secondly, I think we will see a char that relies soly on magic like the Sorceror(D1) and Sorceress(D2). This is the char I look forward to seing. I will be dissapointed if they dont introduce some kind of magic based char in D3.

Thirdly, and this is where I have most doubt, I think we will see another melee char. So some kind of warrior(d1)/Paladin(D2) is my best bet. When D2 first came out there was 2 melee chars, 2 casters and 1 bow using char aswell.

There will be an expansion for sure opening more option for characters. It would be cool to see some kind of Shapeshifter(Druid) and a Martial Arts char (Assassin), but I dont think that will happen untill expansion, just like LoD.

I cant wait till they release more onfo about the game :)

There was also an announcement somewhere that Blizzard had very few plans, if any, to reuse any classes from the old games. The new classes might be similar to the existing ones now...but it might not be straight out bringing them back. As in...it'll be more of a WD situation than a barbarian situation.

A agree with Rappel though...two of the classes are just painfully obvious.

Some type of Mage and some type of Rogue is a guarentee in my mind. My personaly belief is that they will combine some of the classes. Not fully, but don't be surprised to see a Mage using some of the Druids Elemental skills, and a Ranged character using some traps.

Im still hoping that we will be able to use our toons that we've spent so much time building. Because building new toons kinda sux after you get used to having so many abilitys. Even tho Playing new toons can have their advantages, I wanna be able to play my Nec in the new relms to see how he stands up to different monsters.

I'm really hoping that they dont make the chars too much like WoW chars..and I'd really like to see a shapeshifter as one of the 3 remaining chars.. druidsin sounds like a good idea..wind traps and fire traps..stuff like that..poisons..would be interesting to see how they could make that work out

edit:

i'm not saying that i think the chars are like wow chars so far at all..just hoping they won't take that turn for the worse.. and i HIGHLY doubt they will

Im not sure what the new classes will be but i have a few ideas.

Death Knight or maybe Dragon Disciple could be one mixing the sorc and paladin class.
Possibly a rogue, mixing the sin and zon class.
as for the third one i have no idea. I was thinking somewhere along the lines of a mix between a bard (musical instrument player) and a druid.

I cant wait till we get to hear more about d3.

well theres diffinately going to be a amazon type and sorc type class, thats 3 non hybrid classes if u will (barb/ranger/sorc), theres already 1 type of hybrid class WD with summoning and disease type spells, so i figure the last one will be another type of hybrid probably melee/magic class, maybe a paladin "because we’re bringing back a lot of characters from the previous games"

At the World Wide Invitational 2008 event in Paris, Blizzard Entertainment announced Diablo III and two of the game's playable character classes: The Barbarian and the Witch Doctor. There's no word yet on what the three others may be.

Q: Will the seven classes from Diablo II be kept as well as the new classes you're introducing?

A: We have no plans to carry classes over. It's a fresh start, we haven't finalized the final classes or how many there will be. We're not trying to bring back Diablo II classes.

Joystiq, Transcript of WWI 2008 Developer Panel Q&A, 2008

Blizzard Entertainment also stated that other than the Barbarian, there will be NO returning character classes from the first two games. It's quite likely that the Barbarian is an exception because it was far and wide the favorite character class, most often chosen by Diablo II players.

i don't know how to make it more clear or simple.
this is from planetdiablo-here's an exact link for non-believers or whatever.

Even though Blizzard says they won't bring back any more old classes, there is bound to be similarities. I'm just waiting for a pure caster class like the sorc ^_^

Thought that sorc was the most favorite class overall? Barb maybe was the favorite in Classic (pre LoD) and Pala has been the most used char after patch 1.10+. But Im allmost sure the sorc is the most used in all of the D2 universe. Besides there was a mage class (Sorcerer) n D1 aswell. You wouldn find a barb in D1. Hence the sorc class has been in the lore longer.

So choosing the barb as the char to comeback because it is the most popular is total bs! I think they choose it, and I think they said that in the gameplay video aswell, because it stands for brute force. Not much to think about just get in there and start killing monsters :)

Btw that was @ smalltobacco's post :)

The Paladin is by FAR the most liked/used class currently. I didn't even know about this game, much less play before the xpac.

The warrior was the closest thing to a Barb in D1.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_(video_game)

Warrior: The warrior is a powerful melee fighter, master of weapons of war and capable of enduring more damage than any of the other classes. This character also gains a slight increase in the rate of strike with a melee weapon. The background of the character states that they range from barbarians from the northern highlands to noble paladins.

Well Maybe they are going to make some kind of Alchemist? One that uses nothing but potions and elixers.. Just a thought
possible part of the WD tree? seems like it could be right up its alley

just read an article on diablofans.com "Diablo 3 News Community"..heres what i found.

“Our approach for classes in ‘Diablo III’ is that we don’t have a strong desire to bring back classes from the previous game,” Wilson told me. “The goal is to try and give people new gameplay and not just re-hash old gameplay. We’re not just making a ‘Diablo II’ with updated 3D graphics.”

The Barbarian, the only other class announced at this time, will return to “Diablo III,” because the team thought they could add new elements to it. As for the Necromancer, Wilson said that he was “a victim of his own success.”

However, for those who are really passionate about the Necromancer, there’s still hope to see the class in a “Diablo III” expansion. In fact, Wilson thought that expansions might be a great place to bring back any of the old classes not included, particularly since the team itself had passionate debates on the topic — almost as much as the game’s art direction.

“There’s a lot of people on our team who aren’t happy with our class choices,” obviously not too many if they decided to use them

“But after we’ve established ‘Diablo III’ as its own game with its own type of gameplay and experiences, I wouldn’t be opposed to looking at old classes. We are trying to design [the Witch Doctor] class so that if we did bring back the Necromancer, there’s room for him. We’re looking out ahead of time at what our expansions are going to be, so we’ve got to keep room open for some of those other classes down the road.”

“It’s one of those things where, unless we put like 30 classes in the game, people are going to be unhappy. But if we put 30 classes in the game, we’d hurt the game. I think that of the classes that we’ve chosen, there will be something for everyone. I’m not worried that people won’t be able to find a class that they like to play.”

well thats the jist of it..practically 80% of the article..all good info, made me feel at a little more ease especially with the last two paragraphs

Honestly, now that i think about it, I really don't think that a rogue/amazon will be in the first 5.

Hopefully its a hybrid with Sorc+Druid, i think that'd be pretty cool. Maybe hard to do but still, it'd be cool to see some type of Abonimable (sp?) Snowbear using ice spells like FrOrb.

Here's my dream Top 5 Characters (technically only 3 because they announced Barb and WD, but I would have already had those in my top 5)

1. I'd really like a Hybrid of Druid/Sorc...if that's possible, but I see that more than a Sinzon, or a PallySorc...
2. Paladin...no questions asked. Maybe not exactly a palladin, but something along the lines of that. Like a Pally with more Magic Spells, i guess a knight...Melee/Magic....kind of like a PallySorc, but not as sorceress/sorcerer

AND FINALLY

3. THE ASSASSIN. By far my most favorite class ever in an RPG. Melee, Traps, Magic-ish...lol. It, to me, is one of the most original as well. I really like the Druid too, but I just don't see it even making it in the expansion, it most likely, imo, will be fused with some other type of magic or melee class.

Back to my opinion on the Zon, well even tho it is a very important character, they said they didn't want to bring any class back. So if the already have the Barb, and The WD/Necro (kinda) then why would they have a Zon, Sorc, and Pally....that's exactly like Diablo 2...just with different skills, which is pretty much contradicting. The Zon was my least fav. class, so maybe thats why I think it wont be in the Top 5, but i still hope it isn't.

Indeed it seems like they are looking forward to an expansion. I could see them adding 3 new chars, then bring back... idk 2-4 chars from LoD in an expansion as well as new content storywise.

deffinately..let players have a whole new expirience with new chars and new content and all that stuff and then bring back some old chars later maybe with some more new content..thats a pretty good idea

why does everyone actually want the old classes back? It's a new game, so it has new classes. I'm sure everyone will find a preferred class in D3 as well (apart from some ppl that are still crying in a corner because there might not be a paladin). If they take old classes back, perhaps with a few new skills, it's D2 in a 3D-coat and you will already have guides for those classes. New classes = no guides to rely on (yet), no lists of the stats skills have on different lvls, ...., which means: a whole new world to explore, new builds to experiment with,... ("but we lost the pally:(" ....SO WHAT?)

Anyhow, there will be a mindless brute, a magic user with low health and a ranged fighter anyhow, every RPG needs those... Fireball and lightning were in D1 and D2, so it's quite likely that the D3 magic-user will have those as well...

It's all new as far as we know. As I've said in many a D3 thread...I wouldn't mind if the pally was gone for good unless they seriously nerf its goddamn skills.

Anyhow, there will be a mindless brute, a magic user with low health and a ranged fighter anyhow, every RPG needs those... Fireball and lightning were in D1 and D2, so it's quite likely that the D3 magic-user will have those as well...Indeed...I would find it strange to not have the typical mage/archer in there. But on the other hand...it'd be pretty interesting to see the remaining characters made away from that concept.

I was one of the many for another d2 expansion, but I would prefer a fresh start. I just hope they bring back the assassin, no experience in this game has come close to what that class has brought to me yet.

what you seem to be confused with is that there's a difference between preference and demand. the "whiners" are the people who pretty much DEMAND that diablo 3 looks dark, and there are people like me, who PREFER (but accept OTHERWISE) that diablo 3 keeps the dark look. you keep confusing me with what i'm calling the "demanders" even though this is the third time, i believe, that i've explained that i'm not one. just because my signature holds my preference does not mean that i loathe diablo 3 for taking a different direction.

Self-control lesson 1
Situation1: Someone makes a remark on what you said.
What not to do?
-Go into a frenzy and beat the **** out of your computer.
-Start making a fight out of it
-Fight in public: there is this thing called P.M. where you don't bother other ppl
-Go cry in a corner
-Commit suicide

What to do?
-Take a deep breath
-Curse at the person out loud (unless there are other ppl in your vicinity)
-Continue with the topic, while completely ignoring the other persons remark
-Send him a P.M. with as only content "idiot" and ignore him for the rest of your life

What if you can't handle remarks?
-Don't go to forums

Myself, on the other hand, I just comment on what I see. If you say something that I respond negatively to more often...that's on you. I don't really care about anyone that I criticize, for good or bad.

On Topic: I highly doubt they'll have the other classes disappear COMPLETELY in D3. I mean...there has to be at least NPC's of them to help the story along. I mean those races hold valuable information about what went on after D2.

Paladins need to stay NPC. Maybe "The Light" will see how much pallies have abused their hammers and smite...and made those attacks a little more mortal. Dx

I probably shouldn't give any commentary over the argument between Omnicide and smalltobacco, but it was so entertaining that I have to! I know it's none of my business, but.. it's all out here in the public. Anyone can read it. I read it. And for anyone paying attention to the entire conversation I think it was pretty clear that smalltobacco was attacked first by Omnicide (and I don't think Omnicide ever denied that). What's my point? Nothing really. It just seemed as if smalltobacco was getting the most crap when he really didn't deserve it, in my opinion. That's not a diss to Omnicide but merely an observation. Omnicide happens to be my favorite poster in the short time I've been here (because I share most of his views on Diablo 3). I just don't think smalltobacco deserves as much lip as he's getting. He seems to have good intentions.

On topic: I say the three remaining characters will be a Mage, a Knight, and I'm I'm not sure about the third one. :o Maybe a Savage played by Grace Jones.

Well...in the story they say the warriors in D1 range from paladins of zakarum and the barbarians of the north. So, in a way, the warrior COULD be the barbarian.

WRONG. same sprite, MUCH different playability. http://www.ladyofthecake.com/diablo/bbarian.htm
http://www.ladyofthecake.com/diablo/charactr.htm#clinksHe is right on this end, but I answered back with my next post:

I'm not talking about Hellfire.

"Warrior: The warrior is a powerful melee fighter, master of weapons of war and capable of enduring more damage than any of the other classes. This character also gains a slight increase in the rate of strike with a melee weapon. The background of the character states that they range from barbarians from the northern highlands to noble paladins."Notice how I said nothing against him? I wasn't derogatory towards him in any way.

too bad, hellfire was considered the OFFICIAL expansion for diablo 1, and although a different company was involved primarily, blizzard was involved too.

If anything, you can't take what I have to say...as LARGELY proven by this whole fiasco.

no, i'm completely open to preferences. just not when someone gets a period because people have different opinions. once again, there's a difference between the whiners and the debaters. AT LEAST MAKE IT CLEAR THAT YOU AREN'T ATTACKING THE DEBATERS?

I recommend you do one of these two things:

Or

Just for you, babe.

very nice.

I have some guesses:

Whiner (uses all the useless warcry abilities)
Crier (Warcrys with water elemental damage)
Grudge holder (takes a small attack from an enemy, then later attacks before the enemy even cares he's in the area)

O:

To be honest, I'm all for the PM idea.
i'm childish, it shows in my posts.
Contradict yourself less, please.

here's some of your own advice for you.

kenor, your suggestion is really good, but i think it's too late now. there's already what? 4 pages of arguing?

Well I'd guess Necros will be brought back if they plan on bringing back "a lot of characters" as he said. Since Blizzard is working with Knaak and his novels, I just can't see how they will be left out, since Necromancers and the cult of Trag'Oul is the core of the stories.

So the necromancer actually plays a large part in the books? I've never read them-are they worth reading?

Also, WOW, what a big mess...lol.

I think, like most people, a sorceror of some-sort and a rogue/amazon will appear, although (of course!) different. Barbarian has already appeared and the warrior in Diablo 1, as Omnicide said, could range from barbarians. The sorceror type has already been in both games too, and the amazon is very similar to the rogue.

Edit: Anyone else as psyched as I am for Diablo III? I can't wait to see how the story continues.

Yeah...apparently the necromancers are very closely tuned in to the dealings of hell and such...as in they have lots of knowledge over it. Judging on what I've heard from people that did read the books.

I'm also wondering how they plan on bringing back big D....again.

That's odd, considering the necromancers are supposed to be for "balance." Possible flaw? I did hear that one of the books which was accurate to the game was based from the necromancer's perspective.

Yeah, big D ALWAYS finds a way to return. Has Blizzard mentioned anything about this games standpoint? Like how God of War 3 is supposed to be the last in the series.

Necromancers do value balance, that's why they know so much about the darker sides of magic and such, to ensure that balance. That's why they fight for the light and get misunderstood for their methods.

Also I've seen or heard nothing about D3 ending the series.

Ohh that's why they're all just shunned, I never knew that.

Good, although I'm sure most of us want the series to continue, it does have to end at some point. Hopefully not in 3, maybe 4. 4 tends to be on the verge of too much anyway, well, at least for some things.

Necromancers are misunderstood much like "goths" are today.

People are all "zomg dey luv deth lolololol".

They don't love death...they love the balance of life and death...a nearly never-ending circle.

That's quite a true analogy, since gothics are ridiculed when most don't know even half of their story.

I do wonder if a necromancer-type will be in D3, since they seem to be important with balance and stuff...

Well...culturally, the witch doctors are the same as necromancers. They deal with death and life, just in a different way.

Although I do believe that it is most likely that the witch doctor has somewhat "replaced" the necromancer, I still wonder if there is another class that will be more..."death" oriented, with revives and skeletons. I doubt it, the witchdoctor already can summon a wall of zombies and plague his victims, but there's always a possibility. Either way, the necromancer was an excellent character for Diablo 2, and I don't think I want to see him again except as an NPC. Time for some new stuff, ya know?

Exactly. Plus it's just as developers have said...the necromancer was a victim of its own success. Hard to improve on something that worked so well.

To say they play a large part is a vast understatement. The necromancer is in 5 of the 7 books, and in 4 of them he is the main character.

All of the books are worth reading, but if you like necromancers and want to know more about them and their cult, you should read The Kingdom of Shadow, Moon of The Spiders and the Sin Wars trilogy. The Sin Wars books are also really good to get some background story about Sanctuary, how it was made, the fight betwen angels and demons, and ofc to know more about necromancers. All 7 books are worth reading though ;)

I try to wait with that until closer to the release. Like when we get a release date

Indeed he is, though the devs also said they really like the necro and still believe there is room for him. So there is always hope for all necro lovers out there =]

A hireling necro wouldn't fit them at all. Either playable class, NPC or perhaps even see some of them as enemies (they've been twisted by evil somehow). I would be really dissappointed if they came back as hirelings.

HOLY CRAP, that's crazy. And you said that the books are considered official by Blizzard as well?!

I read something about The Kingdom of Shadow and how it's most related to the game, if that's wrong what book is it? I do need to check those books out though, since the necromancer is my favorite character.

I'm sure he'll definitely come back as an NPC to interact, maybe to even fight. I am (wrongfully?) nervous though, he was so cool in Diablo 2 and I don't want him to be cheesy or ridiculous in Diablo 3.

And Pingu, the necromancer as a hireling? EW, that would be so weird.

Well I don't think it's like an official release from Blizzard, but someone working for Blizzard was involved with the making of the books, or at least the trilogy (IIC that is). Knaak also said something along the lines of "I'm not writing for a dead series, only a series with dead in". That was said even before the announcement of D3 which hinted that the game was in making.

Official or not, they are all worth reading imo. ;)

I would say the trilogy (Sin Wars) is most related, since the story takes place some 3000 years or so before the events in Tristram. It's been some time since I read the other books though, so it could be that some of the others come close, or are even more related to the game. But as I remember it, Sin Wars was the one most related (and imo most fun books).

They'd probably be the MOST useful mercenary ever made! It would just be so...awkward though, play as him one game, switch discs and all of a sudden the character you were just playing as is...a merc?

they have the barbarian for the warrior slot.
they have the witchdoctor for the summoner slot.

its pretty obvious they will have an archer and a spellcaster.
they are staple classes in like every fantasy game, including both diablos.

so that really only leaves 1 class to think about.

personally id like to see a return of the monk class.
i was always fascinated by them.

Pure melee = barbarian
Dark magic = Witch Doctor
Elemental magic =Wizard
Pure Range = Archer
last one could be anything. Im thinkin they bring back some kind of assassin/druid/pally
