View Full Version : Wolf Barb help! O:

I'm guessing this is the right place since it has shifter breakpoints etc etc.
Spent alot of time thinking about what build I should make (fire claw, Bear pally or wolf barb) and I finally chose wolf barb cus it's the only one I've never made.
To the point, I wanna know what gear/skills to use, if I'm going pure pvp, and to actually be able to pk decently. I can afford pretty much all I need, so I'd like to be told what would be optimal gear, also if anyone could help me figure out all the alternate setups (vs caster, vs melee) and the like.
I'm hopin for upwards of 10k life, 18-20k+ ar, max or stacked res in hell, Max block, and good damage (considering I'll be using feral rage)
Here are my main concerns: I'm not sure if I should use max ar lifer inventory or wc lifer gcs, or a mix of both, I'm not 100% sure what to do with left over skills, I'm thinkin this would be a good set of skills to max:
Shout, Iron skin, Natural Res, Bo, Mastery, a point in increased speed...?
For gear I was thinking
Wolfhowl (duh..)
Grief pb, or ebotdz not sure yet.
Stormshield
Fort/Enigma depending on who I'm dueling
Gore riders
Dungo/crafted belt (would a crafted belt help when vsing casters?)
Ring/ammy --> angelics
Raven frost
Highlords?
3 mastery/100 life ammy
Blood fists
Etomb vs casters, is what I'm thinkin
Coa (like etomb/coa vs windy like wolf druids)
Thanks in advance.:D
~Your friendly neighbourhood Terry.
This should be under barbs.
First, screw the highlords because the only IAS that counts for a wolf barb is the IAS on the weapon. Others don't apply.
Second, I'd say fort.
Third, just ber your Wolfhowl. If your using stormsheild, dungos, and a bre'd, it's max DR. So screw CoA. Not to mention your only attack is on the Wolfhowl. The only things that get away with normal attack are melee sorcs, and even then, a lot of them use Zeal. Melee Sorcs don't do well pvp either.
I recommend Greif PB, because while your going to sacrifice a few AR, and some life, your going to have Venom (an extra 500 dmg), more IAS, more consistent dmg (your max may be high with ebotdz, but you low's going to be 2k at best) and 20% DS, none of which ebtodz can offer.
Angelics and a Raven will do fine.
Be sure you have max block.
You'll want dmg/lifer charms for this.
Res should not be an issue, and if it IS, max Natural Resist. You don't need anything in any Combat skills, you'll be pure WC's and Masterys. I recommend maxing Sword Mastery (if you use the Greif PB), Iron Skin, BO, Shout, and Natural Resist. Putting a few extra hard points in to Increase Speed could really help for casters too.
Now for boots..I know a lot of people put a lot of hype in Goreridders. But I do not. With Sword Mastery and 20% DS on greif, I think your going to do fine. I recommend the best Shadow Dancers you can get your hands on. If their perfect, they have nice deffence, 30+ to dex, 30% FHR, and 30% FRW. If not, I would use Sands. I would also keep a pair of Sands in my inv in case of a points necro or rabies druid. Or ww sin.
Do it this way and you should hit a good 17-20k AR, 8-10k HP, 15-25k DEF, and 5-8k dmg. This all depends on your gear of course, and how high quality it is.
For you stacked RES issue, I would do a few things. I would NOT recomend a kira, as it will take away Farrel Rage, but it's up to you. I always have a Treachery for fading. If you go Ebtodz, keep a Silencez around as well. A spare Sanctuary in the stash would help. I would also keep 1 of each sorb ring. Don't abuse these, but if you really are having trouble with things (farcast, TG Blizzard, TG Fissure, or just plain old classic BM casters). A Tgods, hotspurs, and a Snowclash would also be a smart move to keep handy. For BM inf users (inf is not BM unless it's being used on a merc, or just playing rude with a nova sorc) I would keep a 4os Monarch with 4 p Topaz. Same thing for stacking vs Cold, only with p Sapphires.
Also it would be a good idea to keep a Pheonix, because with that, Tgods, and Fort, you can hit 95% res light. It also has 400% ED.
I would also keep a DLimb handy for Enchant. My old BVC I converted to a wolfy, which is how I know this (soon to be re-made) and it will hit 26k AR with a DLimb.
Now that I'm done saying all that, I think I'm going to go re-make my wolf barb. After that I think I'm going to write a guide about it..I seem to have plenty of info for it :]
PS
You'll need to be 87 to complete it the way I recommend, if that's how you do it. Up to you.

Hey :D haven't been on here lately, sorry :P
I actually googled ''Wolf Barb'' and found my own topic, LOL!

I do agree...a wolfbarb doesn't have the same freedoms that a pure wolf does. For one...that helm is STUCK onto you.
First thing...the rule that only on-weapon IAS works is for WHIRLWIND ONLY. Feral Rage is a normal melee attack...so all IAS counts.
Maxing Natural Resist is ALWAYS F U C K I N G ALWAYS a bad idea. 1 point SHOULD do you fine. 1-3 points normally...5 if you abso-****ing-lutely need it.
Gores>treks/dancers/whatever the **** else unless it's a dual/tri res boot. If you're worried about poison characters Death's Hand>Treks
Grief has 25% DS. And an axe will wtfpwn a pb.
He was pretty good on the Ptopaz/Psaph Monarch idea. If you can get a jeweler's monarch of deflecting, that'll make your life SO much easier, too.
Also...I like how Toby used a lot of the ideas I put into my BvA...seeing as how this post was after I showed the completed version off.

What to do with additional skill points if not pour them into nat res then? Pumping increased speed? o.o''
Omnicide
11-18-2008, 04:57 PM
Why not boost a polearm mastery like real wolves do?
Sure it won't be Fury...so not as useful...but I would think the range/res/etc would help if you used Tombreaver or such.
Nat Res has SEVERE diminishing returns...and it's just not worth putting more than 5...and that's if you don't have many skillers...1-3...hell...I almost never go past one.
Prerequisites
Sword/Axe Mastery
BO
Shout
Iron Skin
Another mastery (preferably polearms...but spears if you HAVE to)
That would be my take on it.

Woah, misinformation galore.
Okay. WIAS. You know, what whirlwind uses... on-weapon IAS minus the WSM. The break-point for a 4-frame attack is 34.
You'll find that wereform calculations use a very similar mechanic. On-weapon IAS is not affected by diminishing returns, nor does it have caps. Off-weapon IAS is subject to the usual diminishing returns, and IS capped - as a result, you'll find that once you get to speeds of faster than ~8 frames, off-weapon IAS ceases to count.
Now, I've already said that on-weapon IAS is not affected by diminishing returns - this is the same as your WSM or skill-based IAS such as fanaticism (note, however, that fanat here counts as off-weapon and so is still capped). Hence, I'm going to use WIAS as on-weapon IAS minus WSM.
For example, a 6-shaeled pb would have 120 - -30 = 150 WIAS.
The relevant breakpoints are (for 1HS):
5 61
4 101
3 129
2 167
1 221
For the record, wereform central says the 4-frame breakpoint is 79 WIAS - this has been tested, and the correct one is what I posted.
5 can be hit by a grief pb with 31+ IAS.
4 can be hit by a 5 IAS jewel pb, 4 IAS jewel griz caddy, 3 shael/3 IAS jewel zerker axe.
3 can be hit by a 5-shael pb, 4 shael griz caddy
2 and 1 are impossible to hit.
an ebotz hits at 6 frames, and a griefz hits at 7 frames.
Fairly evidently, your weapon choice is a grief pb. It only has mediocre range, but you'll have to put up with it.
Gear;
Beatstick: Grief pb, as mentioned above.
Hat: Wolfhowl is a must. Feral rage attacks faster than standard attack.
Left hand: SS where you'll need the block or DR. You'll also want to keep around a silence for res stacking.
Armor: Fort (AP). Enigma may come in handy against bowies/teleporters, but you'll already have enough IAS to chase down bowies, and you'll need to use desynch to catch casters at any rate.
Shoes: Gores. Their damage potential is insane.
Belt: When you need the DR, dungo's. Otherwise Trang's belt is a nice source of CBF, frees up a jewel slot and has a lot of other nice stuff going for it. It also has a big life bonus, which gets multiplied hugely by BO and wereform.
Gloves: Bloodfists. Life and FHR.
Jewellery: Angelics vs melee, you need the AR. Otherwise, Cat's eye is interesting, and you'll probably want to stack res with your rings.
Switch: Dual HotO's. The difference between hotos and bo sticks is +6 to lycanthrope. I'd hazard a guess that doom flashing is going to be necessary against decent WW barbs.
Sockets: Your SS is dying for CBF. Stick a damage jewel in your hat - either 40ed/stats, 40ed/fhr or 30ed/stats/fhr.
Charms: Damage prefixes, obviously. Suffixes should be a mix of life, frw and fhr.
Skills: Max BO, Shout, Sword Mastery, Iron skin. 1 into the usual 1 pt wonders, sink a few into nat res (5 at the very most), and the rest into increased speed.

So...figure out what mods the gear can have and figure it out?
Building on Rares/Magics is kind of not smart to do on realms so it doesn't really matter. O_o

I'm not on realms. That's why it matters...and why I'm asking.
Should I go ETomb for range or a rare?
I'm testing this out, and with angelics on and maxblock statted Im at like 7.9k life... using 10x 5/20/3s and rest 3/20/20s
I get to 8.7 with all 3/20/20s

5/20/3s?
Guessing 20=life and 3=FRW...not sure on the 5.
Ignoring anything dealing with D2pk because that's not a reason why it matters or the fact that "there's more available".

....That's the reason I'm asking here, because there is more available so it will most likely run a less cooki-cutter like setup.......
5frw/3max/20ar, in 08 (maybe 09) scs could spawn with 5frw.
Anywho, I decided to go with 3/20/20s.
vs caster setup:
Wolfhowl Jah'd
ETomb 2x40/15s 1x Lo'd

Gores
08 Highlords

...because the average IQ of a JSP'er isn't about 4.
All the testing's been done at the AB, but I cbf digging it up. Trawl through the technical archives if you wish, or else take my word for it that 5 frw sc's only give 3 frw.
...
I was about to go on about how etomb was a horrible weapon, then realised you don't need to Zod one on d2pk. Use 3 IAS jewels to hit a 5-frame feral rage.
You're better off Cham'ing your wolfhowl and using full angelics against melee. Since this is d2pk, you can easily have multiple wolfhowls to house different jewels.
In other news, I just found out Titanseal's IAS calc is now in english. Hooray!
EDIT: Are eth gris caddies available on d2pk? A 400ed/100 IAS eth gris caddy (or 240ed/120 IAS) would give grief a run for its money. A 3-frame attack would also give hilarious dodge-lock on a zon.
other EDIT: You should keep a set (~15-20) of 3/20/3's for casters/bowies.
