The Crying Fear Barbarian

Stop reading rigth now if you do not want to play for fun, this build will not allow higly effective killing, it will make other peoples life easier and safer as well as letting you use a "useless skill" in a very good way. The build shines in HC, since it can potentially get to hell without using good gear, and do this in a fast and safe way, and that from lvl 1.

1-Briefing
There are 2 skills you will use and both do not require any precise weapon to function. First is War cry, this will give you quite good damage (2k and its a area effect, without a weapon) as well as a way to stun monsters. Second is Grim ward, this will allow you and your party to eliminate bosses and such without the treat cause by the minions. The goal is to get the highest possible Grim ward and War cry as the area of effect of Grim ward and the damage of warcry will both be increase as you increase their levels. The gear will try to get mostly +skill items, as well as being a real hard tank in order to survive the hits (the tank part can be done by any barb with over 15k def). Before starting let it be known that this build has been tested and it is highly effective in chaos runs, for example a lvl 72 hammerdin was able to run over 10 chaos runs with the same ease as a lvl 90 one. This build is made for people who are playing with friends on HC or SC, or are trying to chaos people.

Like I said the goal for this build isn't to cap DR of FHR, it is to make godly totems to scare off all the little monsters so that only boses are left attacking you. At that point there will only be a few boss that will be attacking you. Since you use war cry, you will be stunning everything that the person killing is targeting. Many types of gear such has: Dungos, CoH, metal grid, raven, wisp, are all different paths you may take. However they will not let you create a 37 yards of protection againts random monsters. This is required for the build to be truly effective, as if the monsters have to run 37 yards in all directions to get out of the totems zone, the chances of them actually exiting the area and attack you is slim to none. You will neither be able to pvp, since your life and other status will be lower then most barb.

2-The stats for this build:
Strenght: Possible to put 0 here if you get a close to +30 str on a +3 WC amy. Put only the amount needed for your gear.
Dexterity: You won't have a shield (unless you use the dual spirit combinaison) so there is no need for max block. Unless you choose the IK set build, you wont be able to hit hard enough to actually need AR.
Vitality: This is quite different, dont put all here. Put a maximum of 400 points.
Energy: Differently from any other build you MUST add at least 100 points here. The ammount of WC you will do will require you to have at least 1k mana. You could alternatively get an Insigth merc and put 0 points here =D, or just live with the 500-700 mana you will have and use the skill named search potion for something.

3-Skills:
20 in War cry (Main damage attack, this will let you actually stun and kill monsters to put up a totem up, max this as soon as you can)
20 in Battle cry (Synergy to War cry, max this once War cry is done, you migth like to use this skill as it decrease damage and defense from monsters)
20 in Taunt (Max this one last, its a less important synergy of War cry)
20 in Howl (Synergy to War cry, max this one after War cry is done, this acts like a totem without the duration, use when no totems are present and danger for party is high)
20 in Grim Ward (Max this one first if you are in a party, you can actually help a lot especially in HC. Note: this skill does not work on undead monsters, also certain other types are also unable to become totems) if you see a venom lord in chaos sanctuary, you are in heaven as these are the only ones that may be transformed into totems in chaos sanctuary.
1 in all essential passives (These are iron skin, natural resistance, Increase stamina and increase speed, only 1 point required, let the +skill do the rest)
1 in Battle command (One point wonder, boosts all your points by 1!!)
1 in Battle order (Only put one point here, as it is useless to max it, this is one of the only builds that do not require high lvl bo, since you will be attacked only by a limited amount of monsters)
1 in Shout (One point here for the same reason as BO, you will get over 15k def anyways, which is way more then you need)
1 in Mace Mastery (This isint even usefull just put it here if you want, or if you choose the IK set build max this skill instead of taunt, You could also put it into leap, just to be able to jump around if you cant afford enigma)

Total: 110, Lvl 99

4-BEST equip (for max skill)
Equipment:
Weapon: Dual HOTO (+6 all skills)
Helm: Special delirium (+2 all,+ 2 grim, +3 inc speed, +3 war cry) it can have +3 grim ward, but the one I found was only +2
Body: Enigma (+2 all skill)
Gloves: Magefists/Trang
Amulet: Mara (+2 all skill) or (+3 warcry amy =D)
Boots: Treks
Rings: dual soj (2x+1 all skill)
Belt: Arach (+1 all skills)
Anni (+1 all skills)
Torch (+3 barb skills)
GC: 9xwarcrie gc (+9 barb skill) of which:
6 have 12fhr (This is not essential, but due to the lack of fhr, it is better to get these charms. Do not get t+life charms as these cost more, and as I said earlier you are not trying to go over 6k life)
3x anything else (I recommend at least 3 that give more mana)

Total+ skill: +28 warcries (30 grim, 31 increase speed and war cry), +19 all barb (+22 inc speed), +16 all (+17 teleport)

Warcry damage: 2100+, stuns for 10 sec, costs 60 mana
Grim ward: scares for over 30 yards!!!

WEAPON SWITCH: Dual Heart Carver (+8 grim, item n potion!!!!!)

With that weapon you get a lvl 52 grim ward (54 with BC and the +3 amy)!!!! Remember... you got BC to boost all i just said by 1 lvl =D
Sadly warcry goes down 6 lvl to 45 (LMAO) with 1.8k damage (That's still insane)
So lvl 54 grim ward as a range of 37.3 yards (In perspective

The max lvl for this skill is 55, which could be acheived with a delirium helm with +3 grim (Let us note that to waste the helm we got would be a waste =P)
This would give a max range of 38 yards to this godly spell.

5-Poor man's build:
Equipment:
Weapon/shield: Dual Spirit (+4 all skills) or IK mace if you are getting the set
Helm: Any helm with +1-2 skill to barb (a tiara or such), or IK helm
Body: IK plate (If you get the full set), Duress or Vipermagi (this is for the +1 skill)
Gloves: Magefists/Trang or IK gloves
Amulet: Any WC amy or Angelic (if u want AR)
Boots: resist boots or IK boots
Rings: Either 2 low bk (if you can afford), Angelics (if u want AR) or str/dex rings
Belt: IK belt (completes the set!!) or any dr belt available
Anni (hum I doubt you will have this)
Torch (I doubt even more)
GC: 9x plain warcrie gc (If you can get some thats awesome)

With Full IK set +a 2 WC amy +2 bk, with no charms you will get to lvl: +9 warcry
With Spirits+2skill tiara+viper+trang+2 WC amy+2 bk+ ik belt, with no charm: +11 warcry
With Dual Carver you lose the +to all skill from the dual spirit, but you can increase your grim ward lvl to +15 (around 24 yard)
With Dual Carver and all the gc, anni and torch, but you can increase your grim ward lvl to +28 (around 34 yard)

I dont really recommend making this build if you cannot afford the best equipment, or at least the charms to increase the level of the skills, since you can get close to max range even with non-perfect gear. Also all the gear i named at first (Dungos, CoH, metal grid, raven, wisp, etc.) may be used if you which to change this build to pvp, but the chances are you will need to scrap grim ward and put more in BO, at which time it would become a warcry barb.

The last time I posted this guide, I receive some comments, one of which were constructive. First off you can scrap Taunt and put into BO if you prefer having higher life (increases by around 75%). Also the delirium helm may be traded for a very rare but possible to find barb helm (2barb/2 warcries/2-3 bo/2os/2shael). These are tweaks that you can make to fit more your preferences

6-Mercenary:
You don't need one, they are useless and anyone that respects themselves would NEVER get one. Now that I just made you all mad or totally confused, lets talk about the best merc possible. You DO NOT want a nm merc especially the holyfreeze ones, They will make the monsters slower and in turn they will not run far enough to be glitched on a wall. I prefer the act 2 normal defensive merc as they have a defiance aura that can truly shine at certain times. Since you are not attacking the other types wont really help you much (act 1 faith merc for example). Also the other act mercs will not allow you to equip polearms, which is the reason you want a merc.

The mercs gear:
Helm: Give it any helm that has life leech on it, many people recommend either vamp gaze or crown of thieves. Alternatively, you can give it a Kira if you choose guardian angel as armor. Also Im sure you can afford to give your merc a crown of ages for the damage reduce (double ber it too).
Armor: Give it a glitched stone armor for over 4k def!!! You can also give it any other high def armor, or guardian angel for max resists (add a um or ber in this case)
Weapon: Here you have choice, either insigth if you dont have alot of mana and want to do war cry. If you think you dont need more mana, you can always get either infinity, to put on conviction aura on em and smash em up if you are with sorcs, or a bonehew if you cant get insigth or infinity. In this case double shael it for 50% ias. eBOTD is also good since it packs lots of damage, poison and as leech life.
But if you want to truly shine, you HAVE to get the best Fear barb merc wep out there, the Tomb Reaver. Why that wep, its not that good??? You are so wrong! First it has 60% ias so the merc attacks like a beast. Then there is a +resistance mod that allows you to equip guardian angel without using a kira (meaning you give it a crown of ages instead). You also find the godliest of all mods a 10% returned as undead, meaning you will create an army of undead as you are killing the mobs around (Notice: I am not sure if this includes when the barb kills monsters also, as the merc was killing with me the entire time, I will say it does not count your kill). The final bonus on this polearm is the fact it can have 3 sockets. this means you can try lots of different mixtures (test this in single player before, as some runes may be hard to get). My merc has 3 shael on it which gave the merc 110% ias. You could also add leech life to help him live (3 amn for 21% leech life), or add 3 x 15 ias/40 ed jewels (which i will add shortly to the weapon) that can pack a load of damage at huge speed. There are other possiblilities like adding certain runes on it (3x ber for 60% cb effective against bosses), (3x ist for +90% mf lets say its good to mf in chaos sancuary, since the merc will be killing the bosses and you will be laughing in his face). Best combinaison is: Ber, 15ias/40ed, Mal (15% ias, 40% ed, 20% cb and prevent monster heal)

7-Conclusion:

This build is the updated Grim barb V1.02, official creation date is 23/04/07, now named Crying Fear Barb V2.03. official creation date is 14/07/08

This build CAN solo hell, do ubers (as a participant), run chaos runs (with a primary killer).
This build cannot rush at hell (damage too low to kill bosses, unless you make a special type of merc) or solo chaos/baal runs.
The modified version of this barb is to not boost taunt, and add points in ww to be able to kill faster certain mobs (not the correct path for the fear barb)
For someone to challenge these allegation, your build must contain the minium of: 20 grim ward, 20 in fear, 20 in warcry, 1 point max in BO and have a earlier date.

This barb may be used in pvp, however it is not pvp based and will not perform as well as a wc or ww barb.
If no corpses are available at a given time and fear is required, the barb may spam howl, has this will cause the fiends to run away and lighten the charge on the runner.
This build is highly effective in concordance with a fire or ligth auradin, as these aura have wide area of effects, and ice/light sorcs.
DO NOT USE the totems in baal runs runned by bots, as they will leave the games quite often, for no real reason.
Finally do not use CTA, as Hoto is more effective (3 BO cap on CTA, use hoto for prebuffs and teleporting).

Important notice:
Item find and Find potion only need 1 point as they receive a huge +28-30 boost, which is more then enouf to reach the highest caps.
You may find quite valuable runes gear in some cases, so after puting up a few totems all the bodies should be searched for extra items or potions.

8-HC mode
I am not an expert in HC, however since I tried this build on HC I can give a few hints on how this build may be used in HC.
First gather with your trusted friends (none of those fake ones that will tp kill you when you reach nm or hell). A team of 1-2 sorcs and a paladin will allow for the fastest leveling and gearing up with you in their team. First, as soon as the den of evil is clear put 1 point into Howl, as this migth be of some use, if some of them are new at HC and migth die. The rest is all about the leveling until you reach 24 and get your totems. Before this, you will rely entirely on Howl as the only real skill you can use. From that point on every time you can put a totem up do it, as this will make sure the sorcs will stay protected as you advance, while they cast away their godly spells. A very important fact is that when you reach 30, if you kept all your points up until 24, you will be able to max out both grim ward and War cry by lvl 50. From then on you must gather +skill gear, as these will further increase the range of your totems. You can enter hell at fairly a low lvl if you get a frozen orb sorc with a ligth sorc, as they cast cast from far, and any light/cold immunes will be destroyed my the paladin. All you need to do is move forward, put up a totem and cast War cry on all rangers/magers that may endanger the sorcs. The paladin can be a hammerdin, which wont really help until he gets better gear, or a auradin which can be uber godly with decent gear since all monsters are runing around and his aura will strike all monsters down. Since you are in hell at this point I recommend getting dual dragon with Hoj, for a lvl 44 HolyFire, that can be stacked to 88, and put on conviction to help the sorcs. The totems let the entire team attack from behind, being safe from all monsters. Bosses should therefore be the priority to kill, so spam all youve got, freeze them, static, do it all!!

Once you reach lvl 80+ in HC, totems will be playing secondary roles, they will make sure you wont be followed by monsters and that huge quantities of monsters rush you (especially when doing chaos runs or baalruns with ur friends). Over lvl 90 You should have godly gear, so the totems will be required to put up every 40 second (totems life is just 40 sec, range increases to intense range, over 40 yards at lvl 50). This is quite effective to create monster barriers in certain games (duel games). The monsters will run around and will end up either on a wall or next to the towns exit (where to poor duelers are waiting to be xp killed by your running devilish mobs.

Any comments?
Again this build was tested on every feature noted, on us-east HC last ladder (Currently remaking this ladder season on SC)
I cannot show you my HC player as I decided to kill myself.... while rushing my friend in hell in viper (reason why I specified not to rush with....is its a pain to lose this char)
I have also tested the difference between the presence and absence of a Cry Fear barb in chaos runs. There is simply no way to die, even if you are close to 0 resistance, since only the bosses will be attacking.

A barbarian has as high FCR as a sorc, so 105 will put him above many.

Vouch 105 on baba/sorcy is crazy fast. Sometimes when I teleport on baba with ondals on it double-jumps in sort.

Okay. TIME TO FIRE THE NITPICK LASERS PEW PEW PEW.

You have no PI solution there, and no matter how you look at it, bosses are going to take forever with warcries (as you've noted, but have no solution for). I'd keep an upped ribcracker on switch (eth and zod'd if you need your daily dose of d00pz, non-eth is effective enough) with which to both 1-pt berserk PI's, and to knock bosses around with.

1 into leap regardless of whether or not you're using enigma. With the abundance of +skills on the build, even a 1pt leap has a considerable knockback radius. I'd consider stunning every monster on the screen a fairly useful thing for a party-oriented barb to be doing. More useful than getting everything to piss off with grim ward.

Speaking of which, max BO over grim ward. Your grim ward scaring off everything within 2 screens is going to be a) horribly useless, b) forces you to chase monsters... into more monsters and c) wastes skill points. I've had fun with taunt and ward with a thrower, but that made use of the small radius and the low flee speed, and the monsters running didn't hamper me killing them in any way, thanks to my ranged attack.

Finally, I'd much rather use a spirit over a hoto, or a rare ring with the wyrm's prefix over a soj, than invest 100 points in energy. Barbs get horrible returns on energy - it's much easier just to get bulk mana from items rather than putting huge investments into energy (consider that 100 points into vita will generally give over 1k hp after bo is factored in). Also, maxed BO will help out your mana a ton, referring back to that point.

The reason i needed to go over 100 fcr on the barb, is the pc my bro uses in extra laggy, this allows him to tele decently. Also for the bosses, I have some gear that allows to down them in a few seconds, except i decided not to post it just because I doubt most people could even think of getting it. This was only supposed to be a starting guide for anyone that is interested in trying this wicked kind of barb.

The goal here is to chaos run all the little nooblet that always try to lure monsters. 1 totem in middle of chaos can actually assure a 100% survival rate even with the most crazy low lvls out there! Hammerdins to not even need to worry about them running since it actually help more ( go at the limit and they run towards you then fear, paf, run opposite side) side note.... 40 yards is an extremely huge radius

Maxing bo is a solution, you just need diminish the ammount of points in taunt, reducing war cry by around 500 damage. A note, you should not spam war cry to kill monsters, get someone else to kill for you. This barb should be popping up the bodies killed by your friends. Remember, if you correctly equip your merc, he can destroy bosses.

This said, I have been doing body runs the last days, which is running cow level, stony field, darkwood, travincial, chaos sanctuary and shenk/eldrich/pindle. This means my hammerdin kills all monsters in these region, while the barb "finds item" in their bodies. Every run last 30 minutes (due to the fact there is so many bodies) to complete. I got a 20 vita sc, a few +3 skill type ammies, tons of sc (fhr, res, str) and socketed cryptic axes/cv some of which had 4 sockets and eth (this are from the bodies, doesnt include all normal stuff you would get). This gives twice the ammount of items of a regular run, plus the boss run that is done once the barb is blowing up the corpses.

Trust me 100 fcr is essential if you actually want to finish to blow up every single cow body in a 8 player cow game.
