View Full Version : Ways to lower ping on Bnet?

I've recently noticed that my average ping is about 125-150ish while on Bnet. I know it's not anything to worry about, but I'd like to lower my ping more. Is there any possible way to lower it, by any chance?

I dont know of any downloads, but I heard something about hitting your stash when it starts excessive lagging.

Hitting your stash will just glitch you and will stop allowing you to click on the stash when it quits lagging, items on the ground, NPC, or even other players. May be thats just me but thats my experience with lag spikes where i click on the inventory.
Just a shot in the dark...but I'm pretty sure your ping has to do with a) your bandwidth b) the distance you are from the bnet servers.
Your ping is basically how long it takes a packet of info to get from your computer to the bnet servers and back...so obviously if you're on a good network your info (packets) will travel faster...and the closer you are to the bnet servers, the less distance that info has to travel.
So, your options for lowering your ping are upgrading to a faster ISP or moving closer to the bnet servers (which I think are located in Cali [?]).
Of course I could be totally wrong on everything I just said...so don't necessarily take my word for it.
On a side note... there are ways of increasing your frame rate, which will reduce graphics lag...they include fiddling with your graphic settings (I think not using direct draw or direct 3D boosts frame rate? I can't remember) or getting a better graphics card.
I usually ping around 90-120 with a frame rate of around 50-60 (most of the real gamers I know on D2 have a frame rate of around 300)...then of course I play D2 on a laptop with a built in graphics card, over wireless (wireless G too...not even N) internet with a (cheap) wireless mouse/keyboard in 640x480 mode (low res)...yeah I lag every so often and have latency issues with all the wireless garbage...but I still kill it in PvP. What I'm trying to say is...unless you're constantly pinging 300+, it shouldn't really affect your game play.

I have a framerate of 1200+ when windowed :p. Then again, my graphics card alone would have enough horsepower to run d2.
Location's the main thing. From aus I typically have 170-210 ms. The servers are located in Irvine, California (yes you were right).

Yeah, I tried checking my ping on East and I had a much lower number than on west.
So I'm guessing higher framerate=better? And doesn't D2 require you to use direct draw or 3D? I've never really had an option that lets me use neither. ._.;;
And I'm using a wireless laptop, too, that could add to the problem. o;
From what I've heard yes, higher frame rate = better. And what I meant by direct draw and 3D is I couldn't remember which one sucks less juice from your graphics card.
And yeah, if you can hook up your laptop with some ethernet cable directly to your router then that would be better than wireless.

Once your framerate gets over 25 (uhh... it should), there is no noticeable difference once it goes higher.
Directdraw is less intensive than direct3d. You can use other non-dx setups such as glide wrappers, but I have no idea how to do so (there's some stuff over at the AB on it).

Ehh. That kinda made me smile. My old comp sometimes had a framrate of... 1 :rolleyes:

Ah ok so it's Direct Draw that I have to go for. Now to just find out how I fix that. Don't really remember how. ._.;
Edit: Stupid me...video test. It tested a "3dfx glide" along with direct draw and 3D...dunno if that's the glide wrapper you were talking about or not. Just figured I should mention it.
