Does a merc with mf matter?

Does merc with mf actually count?

What happens if you have say 300% mf and your merc somehow has 100mf, when you kill something 300% mf is calculated, but when the merc makes the final hit for the kill the items drop with 400% calculated MF
EDIT:
Also if you are running a summoner class character, anything that you have summoned kills would bring out 300% MF based on your character.
