Ok, so i bought a new computer-
eMachines
250gb hd
1gb memory
17" widescreen lcd
I downloaded d2 and expansion, all works fine untill i log on my bnet account.
The mouse is laggy and moves slow, and if i enter a game i get tremendous lagg. It's not my internet service because i can play it fine on my moms computer, and she uses the same exact internet. Is there something i can download to fix this or what? Please help, thanks Josh Young.

First mistake, is getting an emachine, second mistake is using vista. thats just my opinion.
Now on the other hand, before you open your game. Take a look at task manager and kill anything that isnt needed to run. Another thing you might try, is this. Diablo was built on a single 32 bit processor. those dual core type sometimes mess things up. try to disable a one to play diablo using just 1 core of the processor, sometimes that helps.

If you are running vista, an the comp was brand new chances are your using a 64 bit processor dual core. (its just how they come most the time now) im not real sure how to shut one down however. sry on that.

hmm 32 bit 1 gb ram, check your taks manager to see what else is running, lot of times you can shut stuff down thats pulling ram. i can tell ya how to do that.
Open your task manager, and go to processes tab.
Anything that isnt a system process can be shut down. Its best to figure out what each process does, and usualy you can tell by the process name. sometimes it not that easy though. Something to try anyway

how do you open the task manager?

ctrl+alt+delete, you have to be logged as an admin on the system, vista is real particular about that. if your the only user chances are that you already have admin status.

Well sometimes lag comes from the ram on your comp. Running vista alone im supprised there isnt 2g ram in it. vista takes a good chunck out of ram by itself.
Ram sometimes gets spread so thin from various programs running all at one time that it just is pulling too much away from the game as video and sound both use ram expecially onboard video. As far as the programs running, you can try to go to the run command.
type MSCONFIG (dont need caps but i always do) you will get a window pop up that accesses how the computer boots up for safe mode and such,. there should be a startup tab, click on that. Everything in that startup menu dont need to start up with the booting on the computer. Often that will also eliminate anything that might take ram as you saw in the task manager. Makes for a faster boot and less of a hastle when going threw the task manager. It virtually eliminates that hastle anyway because at that point only thing in the processes would be anythig that you started to run and havnt stopped using, of course outside of system processes. example might be internet explorer (foxfire and others) as you go surfing, but as soon as you close those the process should be terminated as well. So just to go that msconfig, startup, disable all, cept maybe a firewall if you have brodband connetions. that should all help with boot speed computer speed and ram in general as it wouldnt be running so much programs that arent needed to be running.

If i would go buy the cd for windows xp and remove vista from my comp and put xp on it would it work?
kwittstruck
04-15-2008, 05:25 AM
Yes that would most difinatly work. i would suggest to read your warrenty info for that. sometimes if you install a different system, it voids the warrenty. mainly because of the reformat in general that you probably would need to do

How much would that cost?

Im sure wow has a little more programing for vista then d2
simply because of the constant updates and demand it has.

mods? they don't have to say anything...
as for your problem, has it got to do with sluggish framerates?
if it is, maybe you can try this...

not sure whether it will still work with vista though.. you can try =)

id also suggest to upgrade your memory to 2 gbs because vista is garbage on 1 gb of ram which i think someone might have mentioned earlier about vista as an OS taking up a chunk of ram itself which is true. personally unless you're good with programming and such vista is not a very user friendly OS, not at the moment at least.

How do i upgrade to 2gs? Is it the ram stick that you have to buy?

The amount of RAM or other programs running has NOTHING to do with why you can't run d2 on vista. Most programs you just have to change the compatablility to run on xp, windows 98, etc......
1.)For starters you may have to download 1.11 patch manually from blizzards website.
2.)Go into you diablo files right click on your d2 shortcut, then hit find target, right click on the icon, click the compatablilty tab, run in windows xp service pack 2.
3.)On the same screen there should be a check to DISABLE desktop compansation.
4.)Make sure the check is by "run as administrator."
repeat these steps as you right click the shotcut itself as well.
hope it helps

I did the compatibility thing allready and im running it as an admin, it doesnt work.

Ok try this....
Reinstall the game using Compatiability mode. Place the CD into the drive & do not let it autorun. Browse the CD using Explorer to the setup file and right click it. Select the compatability tab and set compatiability to Windows 98 or XP. OK out of it then install it using the setup file that you just altered. This fixes 90% of older games under Vista & XP.
Or maybe this......
Windows XP has a set of keys under "etcetc/Explorer/Shell folders" in registry that are deleted in Vista. And diablo 2 looks for those keys for where the "start menu is" So to install you need to replace these deleted keys.
1) Go to Start > Run > type regedit
2) Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt Version\Explorer\Shell Folders"
if there is no string in there called "Programs" put that in with the value:
C:\\Users\\%USERNAME%\\AppData\\Roaming\\Microsoft \\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs
If you can't get this to work I would just dual booting with windows xp. I recently bought new computer with vista and had to do the same a lot of the programs I need will not work with vista no matter what I try.
