ive been doing some tinkering and have found some things out:

1) With all synergies in place Fanaticism gives a greater damage bonus than concentration, plus extra DR, and attack speed so its better IMO than concentration.

2)Holy shock can deal Extremly large amounts of damage but also very small amounts as well, lightning is random.

3)Holy freeze deals large amounts of damage also but its minimum damage is closer to its max than holy shock would be, and it slows groups of enemis.

4) holy fire is almost useless because hell is filled with mostly fire immunes.

5) the holy freeze merc's aura only affects him, so no using his aura for ur benefit other than for the slowing effect.

now my big question is which is better to use for my aura?

I have a Holy Shock Zealot (I call him a Shokazealadin lol) and at level 48, his Holy Shock adds 1-4.7k damage. Unfortunately, he is useless against the LIs that I will find at later levels.

The handy thing about Zealots that use Element auras is that they could be considered caster classes and their damage isn't dependant on the quality of weapon that they use, but by the +skills they have, because a spirit is going to add more element damage than a powerful weapon would add physical damage.

But a Fanaticism Zealot does not rely on one element, and if you get a good physical damage weapon, he would be doing large damage that less monsters are immune to.

It looks like you already have each type's pros and cons set out before you, so I think you should decide on your opinion, and not mine or anyone elses.

If you are a zealer, you use fanaticism. It's the best, bar-none.

Fanaticism for you, and Holy Freeze for your merc, then you get the best of both worlds. Increased speed and damage, and slower enemies. Plus when running into immunes, it's probably easier for you to break PIs (CtC Amp or Decrep weapons) then it is for elemental immunities.

Alternatively, use a standard build which will work... even better! It also has the advantage of not requiring ~8 doops to make.

Sorry for the somewhat old post, but considering the amount of talk on the subject, im curious: given the amount of talk on an act 2 merc with holy freeze, would he then be superior to an act 3 merc - cold?

(Given; zealot pally, fanaticism...through-n-through the whole game...and the point of the merc would (of course) be to support the pally as much as possible)
