Well everyone, I *JUST* got back from watching CLOVERFIELD, and I was VERY impressed; it lived up to and even exceeded my expectations and, it may be a little too early to judge it properly only having watched it once, but this is definitely one of my new favorite movies of all time. The suspense was overwhelming (in a very good way); the acting was excellent; in some scenes, it was genuinely scary; there were some really funny lines in it; and there were a few scenes in the movie that just pure and simply give you goosebumps and make you say "Holy sh*t" almost outloud.
As for the camera-shoots, etc., I can see where it would make some people dizzy, or I can see how some people wouldn't like it, but I thought it was excellent. The really dramatic and suspenseful scenes were caught fantastically on camera, and I thought it worked really well. Had this movie been filmed regularly, as in NOT home-video-style, I think it would not have worked. Just my opinion there.
There's nothing I can say, really, without giving anything away, but...you have to see this movie to believe it. It was remarkable, and I'm probably going to go and see it again in the theater to confirm my vast liking of it, and so I can more solidly place it on my "list" of favorite movies. Either way, it's an easy 10/10 stars.

i saw it on friday...
it was cool... i did get a headache
the fact that the cameraman runs and makes it more realistic like they had a camcorder doing it...
i hear they might make a sequel...
but its gonna be the same monster at the same time
just from a different point of view (different person's view of the attack)

Yeah, NewRivaL, I was just talking to Bryant and SAM about it and that's EXACTLY what I said about a sequel. I'm hoping they make a Part Two, and it should be another home video from a different person/group of people who lived through the attack and made it past the "Hammer Event" AKA when the Army dropped the nuke.
In this hypothetical sequel, I'm hoping for some revelations, and another home video from another person who survived the Hammer Event would be perfect for this.

i found after watching the movie i was pissssed. too much people not enough big monster killing people. i mean c'mon that's what monster movies are all about. as for the sequal based on box office numbers it's quite feasable. along with the garbled audio heard if you bothered to stay through the credits...it's still alive?!?!?!? also i don't believe it will be another point of view to the first encounter. that won't generate enough interest as people will feel the've seen it already. most like me will want answers and a definitive ending something which cloverfield left alot of. but anyways my two cents

I saw the movie and I didn't get dizzy but my girlfriend did and I can see why someone would. The scenes where the cameraman was running did get annoying and were bouncing all over the place. Couldn't really get too many good views of the monster, which i would have liked to see. I did think that without that type of filming it wouldn't have been such a good movie, it made you get a lil more into the action and a normal type of camera would have ruined that. Thought it was a cool concept for a movie and I definitely liked it. That ending got me a lil angry, i wanted to see what happened to the monster haha. And awwww, I didn't stay for the credits haha, is that jumpy lil words all it said at the end? and that's saying that the mosters alive? I should have stayed for that part

Of course, this is first and foremost a monster movie, but it's also a movie about people, and how people react in a time of great crisis. If any more of the monster was shown in the movie than it was, I may have even been disappointed because it would have taken away some of the wonder and mystery of it all that makes the movie as good as it is in the first place. Besides, we did get to see a couple of pretty good shots of the monster, anyway.
And I've talked to a couple of people who said that there isn't much character development in this movie--that's completely false. We come to learn quite a bit about the main characters and come to care for them towards the middle of the movie. Hud was an awesome guy and was my favorite character. He was pretty funny.
As far as the ending goes, I was a little bit upset with it, but I suppose it made sense. It definitely left room for a sequel--that's for sure.
And for the sequel, I don't think it should ONLY be a home video of the attack from a different perspective; I think it should be partly that, but also a documented account of what happened afterwards. Like, did the Hammer Event actually destroy the monster, and have all the parasites been killed, and answer a couple other questions we are left wondering at the end of the first one.

yeaa I do agree there were a few good views of the monster, when he ate the dude, when there was a helicopter flyin around with a spotlight. I liked those parts. If someone hasn't seen the movie don't read this next part i just have a question about one of the parts, might be a bit of a spoiler =P Liz, the lil brother's girlfriend, did she get away in the helicopter? And I wasn't really watching when the girl who the camera guy liked died, but i saw her eye bleeding, then did she explode or what? I thought it was a great movie and yeaa I would like it if in the sequel they went into what happened after the monster and maybe a nice battle scene where the monster dies or whatever may happen to him. I want to know how the whole situation turns out

***SPOILERS***
-Yes, Liz boarded the helicopter and we saw her safely be taken away, but if you pay attention closely at the end of the movie, we hear a member of the Army say something over the raido similar to "All helicopters down! Hammer down in fifteen; the air-raid sirens sound at two minutes out." This leads us to believe that, although Liz made it to the helicopter, her helicopter--like Rob and Beth's--was taken down by the creature. This would suggest that Liz died, just like the rest of the cast.
-Marlena (Hud's "girlfriend") was bitten by one of the parasites and yes, she exploded, probably caused by the parasite being venomous.
If you have questions about Cloverfield, check out the following link, because some of them (your questions) may have been answered in the movie that you didn't realize or catch. Also, this link explains some things and points out some interesting facts. It explains a theory of what the monster actually is, and JJ Abrams's (the producer of the movie) concept of the monster and where it came from, and it explains a few other cool things along with providing factual information that explains why certain things happened the way that they did, etc. Check it out.

the bombs weren't nuclear
That's open to interpretation. Take a look at the link I provided--the "Hammer Down" is one of the topics discussed in it, and what exactly it is. It's never said what it is in the movie, so...it's anyone's guess.
cthulhu dawn127

It may have been nuclear, but the site gives a lot of good arguments that its not and I agree. Everything would have been vaporized if they dropped a nuke that close to them. No video to be watching
TheDOMINATOR
01-23-2008, 02:53 AM
Yep, I agree that the Hammer Down wasn't nuclear as well. It was probably just a massive bombardment of bombs being dropped on the creature (or something :P).
This is why we need a sequel--to answer all of these questions! :P

if it were to be a nuclear attack on manhattan it would be one centralized attacked directly on the monster. not serveral placed all over the island. especially two in central park!! (have you ever been to nyc?) one maaybe two nuke's would be sufficient to level the city(one lower one upper manhattan) plus the explosions depicted would have been much different visually and audibly. and your link disproves the nuclear event.

It's hard to explain, actually.
There aren't any sketches that actually nailed it.
Basically.... it's got the back legs of a gorilla, and the torso of a gorilla.
But it has the tail of an eel and the front arms of a bat (no wings, but reverse elbows).
And then it has the head of a monster from Resistance: Fall of Man but it has expanding cheek/gill things like a pufferfish.
And.... that's about it.
there were some really funny lines in it
"Im Just sayin What if a Hobo on Fire starts running at us!"
I LOLD IRL @ This when He said it.... Gawd.
I agree with Keitho Here It was an Excellent Film But There was ALOT of Questions They left Just Laying there But Gave hints at Such as "How did it get here"

Indeed.
But My question is....What was it?
Whatever it is, it's not an alien--it's from Earth, and it's from the bottom of the ocean, and it has been there for hundreds, or even thousands, of years. JJ Abrams sort-of confirms this in the link I provided a few posts ago back on Page 2. The thing that you MAY have seen falling out of the sky at the very end of the movie (when it showed Rob and Beth on the ferris wheel) was NOT the creature--it was apparently a fallen satellite, according to Mr. Abrams.
This made me happy when I read it, because I wasn't looking for an alien, I was looking for something from Earth, from the ocean, and I guess that's exactly what it is.

I want them to make a sequel, though.
It would fit perfectly.
It'd be from the perspective of a soldier's helmet cam (since those actually make sense) and it could discuss briefing which would talk about the monster's origin, and then show them actually taking it, and all of the little ones, down.

Yeaa the movie was filmed by someones camera and he is constantly running around and the camera does jump. It's like an actually person filming it which is kind of cool.
I thought the monster had like a long, whippy, Godzilla tail with his legs too. And he had this cool lookin mouth that opened real long not wide. I thought it had what looked like two big idk claws maybe? They were these long bony things stickin out of his back. I thought he looked real cool and he released these smaller monsters that looked like 6 legged spiders that just ran around real fast and jumped and attacked people.
I loved the part with the flaming hobos, definitely thought it was the funniest line.

Wow, thanks for this, Habit88. Now everything makes sense, most noteably the scene at the end of the movie where we see something fall from the sky and into the ocean. I knew it was a satellite and not the monster, itself, but now it makes sense.
One thing, though: if toxic waste from Rob's company in Japan mutated the monster into what it is now, then that means it started out as something else. What was that something else?
Even when you answer questions about this movie, more questions arise! LOL.

I heard multiple reviews from both sides...It's kinda one of those movies you love or hate. :/
But that monster *SPOILERS***, from what I heard( I havent even seen the movie but this is from someone who has) the japanese were expirementing with cloning and mutations and thus arouse the monster. They thought of it as an abomination so they disposed of it thinking that it would die since it was young. Then the toxic waste from that same company was in the water when the monster was supposidly "Disposed"...Thus making it huge and gigantic...then it roamed the seas and it stumbled upon the rumble of the always busy New york city.
Anyway thats my idea and part of something I heard.

I know there are a lot of really weird f*cking animals down in the ocean's deepest trenches, but I'm still curious as to what the creature started out as. Did it start out as a species that we have knowledge of AKA that we know to exist, or did the monster start out as something we've never seen before and the minerals from Slusho turned it into a much larger, more hostile thing than what it was previously?
GAH! I should try not thinking of it, Lolz. Movies that I really like with unanswered questions...they really get to me sometimes. :P

I havn't seen the movie yet but wouldn't mind checking it out.
Still, I'm not big on a camera bouncing and spinning around through out a movie. It seems like an easier way to make cheaper special effects or let you use more of your own imagination if things are a blur.
I didn't mind 28 Days Later because of a new horror story, but 28 Weeks Later was poor with the camera work. Half that movie could have been filmed in a dark closet and wouldn't have made a difference.
Most people say this movie is better because of it, so I guess it's worth checking out.
I couldn't imagine this movie being very good if it was shot any other way.
It would have just been...not..good.

Not only that, but the home-video style camera shooting of Cloverfield makes it truly unique. JJ Abrams wanted a movie that represents the absolute chaos and fear of the people that were in the path of the monster's fury and for the audience to witness it almost first-hand, and by filming the movie the way that it was, he accomplished just that, and masterfully, in my opinion.

I might have been a little harsh on 28 Weeks Later, because there was good filming in some parts of the movie. Then there were other parts that made me feel like not hitting the pause button while getting another beer. It didn't keep my attention so much as the original 28 Days Later.
Did some searching for [Rec] and it sounds interesting. Only problem is it's from Spain or something, right? The one site said because of the hype, they are already making a state side remake. Makes me want to see the original even more.

Yeah [Rec] is in Spanish (subs) but it's fantastic.
I highly recommend it, as I can't see the remake being as good (which is usually the case).

I really enjoyed this movie. It has a fun plot, and lots of crazy scenes in it that even at a pg-13 rating made me jump like a 7 year old girl.
the scene in the tunnel "what's back there?" "DON'T ASK JUST RUN!!!!"
hahaha, i was like "oh damn, you people are pwnt."

On some movie website I was reading, that scene was nominated as a candidate for "The scariest sci-fi movie scene in movie history" -- indeed, it was really good. I don't recall jumping myself, but the "Holy crap" element was definitely there. :D
